Unofficial Spinoff Manga Released for Pon no Michi Original Anime
Kodansha’s YanMaga Web website has recently debuted the spinoff manga titled “Pon no Michi: Ryūkyoku Shānyū-hen” (The Way of Pon: Ryūkyoku Shānyū Arc), created by Jun Endō and the Pon no Michi Production Committee. This manga serves as an unofficial continuation of the original mahjong anime, Pon no Michi.

Unlike a typical “what if” scenario set in the future, the spinoff manga explores the lives of the adult characters from the original series. Although the title and characters remain the same, the story takes a different direction. Fans are urged to forgive any discrepancies and embrace this over-the-top spinoff.
Tsukasa Unohana Adapts Pon no Michi Original Anime into Manga Format
Additionally, Tsukasa Unohana, known for her work on Anima Yell!, has also adapted the original anime into a manga format, which began serialization in Kodansha’s Nakayoshi magazine on September 1. The compiled book volume of this manga is scheduled for release on January 12.
Overview of Pon no Michi Original Anime
The Pon no Michi anime premiered on January 5 as part of the “Animeism” programming block on TBS, MBS, and BS-TBS. The story revolves around Nashiko Jippensha, a high school student from Onomichi City in Hiroshima Prefecture, who is kicked out of her house. In her search for a place to gather with her friends, she discovers that her father’s old mahjong parlor is now vacant. Determined to revive the establishment, Nashiko transforms it into a vibrant hub where they can have fun, cook, drink tea, and occasionally indulge in a game of mahjong.
The original story for Pon no Michi is credited to IIS-P, while Tatsuma Minamikawa (known for Fire Force and Fairy Tail: Dragon Cry) directs and writes the anime’s scripts at OLM. The original character designs are drafted by Negi Haruba (creator of The Quintessential Quintuplets), with Kenji Ōta adapting them for animation. The music for the series is composed by Yūko Takahashi, Takuma Sogi, hisakuni, Rico Ohashi, Kanji Eguchi, and Shari. The opening theme song, titled “Ponpopopon,” is performed by Kana Nakada feat. Pon no Michi All Stars, a former member of the Nogizaka46 idol group and current professional mahjong player. The ending theme song, “Good Luck Waker,” is sung by halca.
