Yumiko Seki disclosed that she had known Togashi for a long time, dating back to when he attended a Keyakizaka46 live event. She shared various illustrations that Togashi had specially created for her after her graduation in April 2023, showcasing their close relationship as fan and artist.
During the show, Yumiko read aloud a letter from Togashi, in which she asked him how much of the HxH story he had planned before starting to draw it. Togashi’s response shed light on his initial vision for the manga. He mentioned that he had a rough idea for an otherworldly story centered around the profession of Hunters and believed he could continue it indefinitely. He decided to start the manga with Gon taking the Hunter Exam and planned to include a timeskip.
Changes in Togashi’s Initial Storyboards
Togashi had storyboards prepared for the first three chapters, with the intention of having Gon fail the Hunter Exam and then skipping ahead in time. However, after discussing it with his editor, the idea of Gon failing the exam was scrapped. Togashi had already decided to introduce two important characters, Killua and the villain Hisoka, early in the exam.
Togashi’s collaboration with his editors extends beyond the decision to scrap the initial timeskip plan. Lynn Okamoto shared a story about a Shueisha editor who worked on HxH early in their career. This editor timidly suggested changes to Togashi’s storyboards and was pleasantly surprised when Togashi accepted and incorporated those suggestions. This anecdote highlights Togashi’s openness to input and collaboration within the creative process.
Togashi’s Vision and Collaborative Approach
The revelation of Yoshihiro Togashi’s original plan for a timeskip early in the Hunter x Hunter manga offers fans a glimpse into the initial vision he had for the story. Togashi’s willingness to adapt and collaborate with his editors showcases his dedication to creating a captivating and unpredictable narrative. Fans can appreciate the intricate planning and creative process behind this beloved manga series.
