Among the four endings he has crafted, Togashi has also presented a poignant fourth option, known as ‘ending D,’ which could serve as a final conclusion in the unfortunate event of his passing. This revelation has left fans eagerly awaiting the resolution of this beloved series.
Ending D: A Bittersweet Future
‘Ending D’ takes place years into the future, following a time skip. The story begins with a young girl named Gin, who is fishing at a peaceful pond and manages to catch a massive fish. With pride, she presents the fish to her mother, boldly declaring her decision to never become a hunter like her famous grandfather, Gon.
As the narrative progresses, Gin’s mother expresses disappointment in her daughter’s choice, as she had hoped Gin would follow in her grandfather’s footsteps. This leads to a discussion about Gin’s future with her father, who joins in the conversation.
The scene then shifts, and Gin reveals her reasoning behind her decision not to become a hunter. She explains that she witnessed her grandfather’s frequent absence during his adventurous journeys, which left her grandmother, Nouko, alone at home. Determined to avoid a similar fate, Gin vows to stay on the island and remain by someone’s side forever.
In the final moments of ending D, a young boy enters the room, and the scene concludes with a bird soaring into the sky as someone watches, leaving readers with a sense of wonder and longing.
Togashi’s Preferred Ending and Fan Reactions
Togashi has expressed his hope to create an ending that would be satisfying enough without resorting to the other possible options, labeled A, B, and C. Interestingly, Togashi himself has a personal preference for ending C, despite predicting that it may receive a significant amount of negative reactions from fans.
He anticipates that ending A would garner an 80% positive reaction from readers, while ending B would elicit a more mixed response. On the other hand, ending C is expected to face a staggering 90% negative feedback. Nonetheless, Togashi remains committed to his artistic vision and stands by his choice.
The Hiatus and the Return
Due to Togashi’s health issues, the manga has been on hiatus since January. Shueisha, the publisher, announced a change in the serialization format, discontinuing the weekly release. However, after a nearly four-year hiatus, Hunter x Hunter made a triumphant return in October 2022.
The long-awaited 37th volume, the first in four years, was published in November 2022. Fans worldwide rejoiced at the return of their beloved series, eagerly anticipating the English release of the 37th volume by Viz Media on October 3.
Hunter x Hunter’s Phenomenal Journey
Originally launched in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 1998, Hunter x Hunter has captivated audiences and inspired countless fans. Its success has led to the creation of two television anime series, two anime films, and several original video anime titles.
As Togashi continues to navigate his health issues and work towards bringing the story to a satisfying close, fans eagerly await the final resolution of this extraordinary series. The world of Hunter x Hunter will forever hold a special place in the hearts of its devoted readers.
