Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Manga to Receive Novel Adaptation
Shogakukan has announced that the popular manga series Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (Sōsō no Frieren) will be receiving a novel adaptation titled Shōsetsu Sōsō no Frieren ~Zensō~ (Novel: Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End ~Prelude~). The novel, written by Mei Hachimoku, is set to be released on April 17th.

The prequel novel will feature five short stories that are not included in the manga, focusing on the characters Frieren, Fern, Stark, Lawine, Kanne, and Aura. It will provide a deeper look into Frieren’s journey before she embarks on her quest to “get to know people.” The novel is being supervised by the original manga’s creator, Kanehito Yamada.
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Manga and its Success
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End manga, created by Yamada and illustrated by Tsukasa Abe, first debuted in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine in April 2020. After a brief hiatus, the series resumed serialization in March 2023. The manga has gained significant popularity, with over 17 million copies in circulation and 7 million copies added since the release of the anime adaptation.
The manga has also received critical acclaim, winning the New Creator Prize at the 25th Annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2021 and the 14th Manga Taisho Award in the same year. It was nominated for Best Shōnen Manga at Kodansha’s 45th annual Manga Awards in 2021 and the 46th awards in 2022. Additionally, it was included in the American Library Association’s Graphic Novels & Comics Round Table’s top 10 list of 2022 Best Graphic Novels for Adults Reading List.
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Anime Adaptation
The Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End anime premiered with a two-hour special on September 29th and is currently airing. It is the first television anime series to premiere in NTV’s “Kinyō Roadshow” programming block. Crunchyroll is streaming the anime as it airs, with an English dub also available.
